🎧 Iru Helper Note — Practice comparing things at the Korean Helper Widgets — useful when shopping, ordering, or chatting! ⚖️
🌈 The Big Picture
To compare two things, use A보다 B를 더 좋아해요 ("I like B more than A") — the thing you're comparing against gets 보다 ("than"), and the thing you prefer gets 더 ("more"). Example: 저는 커피보다 차를 더 좋아해요 ("I like tea more than coffee"). ⚖️
🎭 Equal, Both, or Neither
- A만큼 B도 좋아요 — "I like B as much as A" (equal preference) 🟰
- 둘 다 좋아요 — "I like both" 🙆
- 둘 다 별로예요 — "I don't really like either" 🙅
- 차라리 ...가 나아요 — "...is better (if I had to choose)" 🤷
- 그건 그거고, 이건 이거예요 — "that's that, this is this" (they're different, can't compare directly) 🔀

🗣️ Speaking Practice: Mini Dialogue
Read both roles out loud, then switch roles!
민수: 지은 씨, 떡볶이 좋아해요, 김밥 좋아해요? 뭐가 더 좋아요?
[Minsu: Jieun ssi, ddeok-bo-kki jo-a-hae-yo, gim-bap jo-a-hae-yo? mwo-ga deo jo-a-yo?]
Minsu: "Jieun, do you like tteokbokki or kimbap? Which do you like more?"
지은: 둘 다 좋아하는데, 그래도 떡볶이를 좀 더 좋아해요. 매콤한 게 좋아서요.
[Jieun: dul da jo-a-ha-neun-de, geu-rae-do ddeok-bo-kki-reul jom deo jo-a-hae-yo. mae-kom-han ge jo-a-seo-yo.]
Jieun: "I like both, but I like tteokbokki a bit more. Because I like spicy-savory food."
민수: 저도요! 근데 김밥도 떡볶이만큼 자주 먹는 것 같아요.
[Minsu: jeo-do-yo! geun-de gim-bap-do ddeok-bo-kki-man-keum ja-ju meok-neun geot ga-ta-yo.]
Minsu: "Me too! But I feel like I eat kimbap just as often as tteokbokki."

[Jieun: ma-ja-yo. dul da ja-ju meok-neun-de, eo-ul-lyeo meo-geu-myeon deo ma-si-sseo-yo!]
Jieun: "Right. I eat both often, but together they're even tastier!"
민수: 그러네요! 그럼 다음에 같이 먹으러 가요.
[Minsu: geu-reo-ne-yo! geu-reom da-eu-me ga-chi meo-geu-reo ga-yo.]
Minsu: "True! Then let's go eat together next time."
🧭 Speaking Tip
Use 조금/좀 더 ("a bit more") to soften comparisons, rather than just 더 alone — 떡볶이를 좀 더 좋아해요 sounds more natural and less absolute than 떡볶이를 더 좋아해요. ⚖️
⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge
❌ Mixing up word order: 더 커피보다 차 → ✅ The structure is always [A]보다 [B]를 더, with 보다 attached to the thing you're comparing against.
❌ Confusing 나아요 (better, from 낫다) with 좋아요 → ✅ 나아요 is used specifically in comparisons ("better than"), while 좋아요 is a general "good/like."
❌ Forgetting 만큼 for "as much as" → ✅ A만큼 B도 = "B is also [adjective] as much as A."
❌ Saying 둘 다 싫어요 when you just dislike both mildly → ✅ Use the softer 둘 다 별로예요.
You can now confidently compare anything — 비교왕이에요! ⚖️✨
