🌈 The Big Picture

카톡 [ka-tok] is short for KakaoTalk, the messaging app almost everyone in Korea uses — so common that "카톡하다" has basically become a verb meaning "to message someone." Saying 문자할게요 (I'll text you via SMS) and 카톡할게요 (I'll message you on KakaoTalk) are not the same thing.

카톡 보냈어요 — "I sent you a KakaoTalk message"

카톡 확인해 보세요 — "Please check your KakaoTalk"

If someone asks for your contact info, they're very likely asking for your 카톡 ID, not your phone number — having KakaoTalk is assumed for almost everyone.

🎭 카톡 vs. 문자: App Messages vs. SMS

카톡 uses internet/data and includes read receipts, stickers (이모티콘), and group chats (단톡방). 문자 is regular SMS — used as a backup when someone doesn't have KakaoTalk, has no signal, or for very official/automated messages (like bank alerts).

🧭 Speaking Tip

When you're not sure whether to use 카톡 or 문자, default to 카톡 — it's the assumed channel for almost all casual communication in Korea. Save 문자 for situations where data/wifi might be an issue, or for very formal/automated notices.

If you're worried about being too slow to reply, a quick 답장이 늦어서 미안해요 goes a long way — Koreans generally appreciate the acknowledgment more than instant replies.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

❌ 문자할게요 when you actually mean "I'll message you on KakaoTalk"

✅ 카톡할게요 / 카톡으로 보낼게요 — be specific about the app, since they're different

❌ Posting personal messages meant for one person into a 단톡방 (group chat) by mistake
