IS #148 — Closing a Discussion
How to wrap up a conversation, meeting, or debate in Korean with clarity and warmth.
Iru Helper Note
Knowing how to close a conversation is as important as opening one. Korean has specific phrases for signaling closure gracefully.
그럼 이걸로 마무리할까요?
(Shall we wrap this up then?)
🔒 What You'll Learn Today
Whether you're ending a meeting, a debate, or a casual discussion, Korean speakers use a specific set of expressions to signal that a conversation is wrapping up. In this lesson, you'll learn how to summarize, signal closure, propose next steps, and end discussions in a way that feels complete — not abrupt.
📌 Closing a Discussion — Key Expressions
Expression | Meaning | Notes |
그럼 이걸로 마무리할까요? | Shall we wrap this up? | Gentle closure proposal |
이것으로 마무리하겠습니다 | We'll wrap up here | Formal declarative close |
오늘 이야기는 여기까지 할게요 | Let's leave today's conversation here | Casual but clear close |
정리해 보면... | To summarize... | Pre-summary signal |
요약하자면... | To put it briefly... | Cleaner summary opener |
결론적으로 | In conclusion | Formal wrap-up |
다음에 더 이야기해요 | Let's talk more next time | Warm open-ended close |
이 부분은 나중에 다시 봐요 | Let's revisit this part later | Tabling a point |
오늘은 여기서 끊을게요 | I'll cut it here for today | Casual stop point |
그러면 오늘은 이만 할게요 | Then let's leave it here for today | Friendly close |
추가로 할 말 있어요? | Anything else to add? | Pre-close check |
다음 단계는 뭐예요? | What's the next step? | Action-oriented close |
다음에 연락할게요 | I'll be in touch | Conversation-ending promise |
오늘 고생 많으셨어요 | You worked hard today | Warm, respectful close |
💡 Key pattern: The complete close has three parts: summarize (정리해 보면) → signal closure (이걸로 마무리할까요?) → next step or warm send-off (다음에 더 이야기해요 / 고생 많으셨어요).
💬 Conversations in Action
Closing a meeting:
A: 추가로 할 말 있어요? (Anything else to add?)
B: 없어요. 그럼 이걸로 마무리할까요? (Nothing. Shall we wrap this up then?)
A: 네, 오늘 고생 많으셨어요. 다음 단계는 제가 연락드릴게요. (Yes, you worked hard today. I'll be in touch about next steps.)
Closing a casual discussion:
A: 이 주제 너무 길어지는 것 같아요. (This topic seems to be going on too long.)
B: 맞아요. 오늘은 여기서 끊어요. 다음에 더 이야기해요! (Agreed. Let's cut it here today. Let's talk more next time!)
🌏 Cultural Note — The Importance of the Close
In Korean work and social culture, abruptly ending a conversation or meeting without a proper close feels jarring — even rude. A good close signals that you valued the time, acknowledges the other person's effort (고생 많으셨어요), and often leaves a door open for next time (다음에 또 봐요 / 연락할게요). This is especially important after any kind of collaborative discussion or disagreement, where the close helps restore warmth and forward-looking goodwill.

Pitfall: Ending without acknowledgment
Walking away from a meeting or discussion without 고생 많으셨어요 or a warm closing phrase can feel dismissive in Korean culture. Even a quick 오늘 고생 많으셨어요 or 수고하셨어요 before leaving signals that you valued the person's time and effort — always include it.
