TOPIK II Prep
TL;DR
  • Level 6 readiness means you can handle dense texts, infer unstated opinions, and write coherent answers under time pressure.
  • Your goal is not “understand every word,” but “identify structure, purpose, logic, and evidence quickly.”
  • Use this checkpoint to find weak points before a full mock test: reading stamina, writing control, vocabulary depth, and distractor resistance.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note
Read the Korean prompts and model sentences aloud once before answering. For TOPIK II Level 6, silent understanding is not enough: aloud reading helps you notice sentence endings, connectors, topic shifts, and formal written style.

🔑 The Big Picture

A TOPIK II Level 6 score requires more than high vocabulary. You need to show academic-level comprehension and controlled written expression across unfamiliar topics such as society, science, culture, education, environment, and policy.
Level 6 readiness usually means you can:
  • Understand the main claim of a long text even when the vocabulary is abstract.
  • Infer the writer’s attitude, purpose, or hidden assumption.
  • Separate examples from the central argument.
  • Recognize how connectors such as 따라서, 반면, 그럼에도 불구하고, 나아가, organize logic.
  • Write a clear answer that is relevant, coherent, formal, and grammatically stable.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Read by structure, not word-by-word

Dense TOPIK II reading passages often follow predictable structures:
  • Problem → Cause → Solution
  • Claim → Evidence → Implication
  • Old view → New view → Evaluation
  • Phenomenon → Example → Writer’s conclusion
When the passage feels difficult, ask: “What role does this sentence play?”

2. Track stance and degree

Level 6 questions often test nuance. Pay attention to words that show degree or limitation:
  • 반드시, 전적으로, 항상 = strong / absolute
  • 대체로, 일부, 상당히 = partial / qualified
  • 오히려, 그보다, 다만 = contrast or correction
Wrong choices often distort degree by making a cautious claim too extreme.

3. For writing, control beats decoration

A Level 6 answer does not need overly complex grammar in every sentence. It needs:
  • Direct response to the task
  • Logical paragraph flow
  • Appropriate formal register
  • Varied but accurate sentence patterns
  • Clear examples that support the claim

✅ Exam Strategy

Reading checkpoint strategy

  1. First 20 seconds: identify topic, paragraph structure, and repeated keywords.
  1. Before choosing: predict the answer in your own words.
  1. Check distractors: eliminate answers that are too broad, too narrow, opposite, or unsupported.
  1. Do not over-translate: use grammar and connectors to follow logic.

Writing checkpoint strategy

  1. Spend 2–3 minutes planning before writing.
  1. Use one clear thesis sentence.
  1. Use connectors naturally: 첫째, 또한, 그러나, 따라서, 이러한 점에서.
  1. Keep examples specific enough to prove the point.
  1. Reserve time to check endings, particles, spacing, and repetition.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Vocabulary panic: One unknown noun should not stop you. Use surrounding verbs, examples, and connectors.
  • Extreme answer traps: Avoid options with 항상, 절대, 완전히 unless the passage clearly supports them.
  • Topic drift in writing: Do not write a general essay if the task asks for a specific comparison, cause, or solution.
  • Overusing advanced grammar: Incorrect advanced grammar lowers clarity. Use familiar grammar accurately.
  • Ignoring paragraph function: In hard reading questions, the “why” of a paragraph matters as much as the “what.”

🧭 Readiness Rubric

Use this quick rubric before taking a full mock test:
Area
Level 6-ready behavior
Warning sign
Reading
You can identify claim, evidence, contrast, and conclusion quickly.
You translate line by line and lose the main logic.
Vocabulary
You infer meaning from context and recognize formal written words.
One unknown word makes the whole passage feel impossible.
Writing
Your answer has a clear thesis, organized paragraphs, and relevant examples.
Your ideas are good but the structure is hard to follow.
Time
You can move on from hard items and protect time for high-value questions.
You spend too long on one difficult passage.
