TL;DR
- TOPIK I Level 2 success comes from fast recognition of endings, particles, time words, and topic shifts.
- In the final review, stop “studying everything” and train the exact choices that decide points.
- For high scores, read Korean aloud, predict before looking at options, and check distractors carefully.
🎧 Helper Note
Read every Korean sentence in this lesson aloud once. For final review, your goal is not only to understand the sentence but to recognize common TOPIK wording quickly and naturally.
🔑 The Big Picture
This checkpoint is a final high-score review for TOPIK I Level 2 learners. At this stage, you already know basic sentence patterns, but small details still cost points: one wrong particle, one missed time expression, or one distractor that sounds similar to the correct answer.
TOPIK I Level 2 questions often test whether you can:
- Identify who does what, where, when, and why
- Choose the most natural grammar ending or connector
- Understand short notices, messages, advertisements, and everyday passages
- Avoid options that copy words from the text but change the meaning
- Use simple but accurate Korean patterns under time pressure
The goal of this lesson is final organization: review the patterns that produce the most points and practice choosing answers with exam strategy, not guessing.
🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns
1. Check the sentence skeleton first
Before choosing an answer, find the basic structure.
- 누가? = Who?
- 무엇을? = What?
- 어디에서? = Where?
- 언제? = When?
- 왜? = Why?
- 어떻게? = How?
Example:
- 저는 토요일에 친구하고 도서관에서 한국어를 공부해요.
- 누가: 저
- 언제: 토요일
- 누구하고: 친구
- 어디에서: 도서관
- 무엇을: 한국어
If you can find these quickly, reading and listening questions become much easier.
2. Particles decide the relationship
Particles are small, but they often decide the answer.
Particle | Core meaning | Example |
은/는 | topic, contrast | 저는 학생이에요. |
이/가 | subject, new information | 비가 와요. |
을/를 | object | 책을 읽어요. |
에 | time, destination, location of existence | 학교에 가요. |
에서 | action location, starting point | 집에서 쉬어요. |
하고/와/과 | with, and | 친구하고 먹어요. |
에게/한테 | to a person | 동생에게 선물을 줘요. |
3. Time words control tense
TOPIK I frequently uses time expressions to force the correct tense.
- 어제, 지난주, 작년 → past
- 지금, 오늘, 매일 → present or habitual
- 내일, 다음 주, 곧 → future or intention
Examples:
- 어제 영화를 봤어요.
- 매일 아침 운동해요.
- 내일 친구를 만날 거예요.
4. Connectors show logic
Learn the meaning before translating word by word.
Connector | Meaning | Example |
-고 | and, then | 밥을 먹고 학교에 가요. |
-지만 | but | 비싸지만 좋아요. |
-아서/어서 | because, so; sequence | 피곤해서 일찍 잤어요. |
-으니까 | because, so; reason for suggestion/command | 추우니까 문을 닫으세요. |
-기 때문에 | because | 시간이 없기 때문에 택시를 탔어요. |
5. Final review should be selective
Do not try to relearn the whole language before the exam. Review the patterns that appear most often:
- Basic tense
- Particles
- Connectors
- Numbers, dates, times, prices
- Location and direction
- Polite requests and suggestions
- Short reading purpose: notice, invitation, advertisement, schedule
✅ Exam Strategy
Strategy 1: Predict before reading all options
For grammar questions, cover the choices mentally and decide what kind of word is needed.
Example:
- 어제 친구를 ____.
- Time word: 어제
- Needed: past verb
- Likely answer: 만났어요 / 봤어요 / 갔어요
Prediction prevents distractors from controlling your thinking.
Strategy 2: Eliminate impossible options first
Even if you do not know the perfect answer, remove choices that violate tense, particle use, or meaning.
Checklist:
- Does the tense match the time word?
- Does the particle match the verb?
- Does the connector match the logic?
- Does the answer repeat text without changing the meaning incorrectly?
Strategy 3: Watch for “same word, wrong meaning”
Reading distractors often reuse words from the passage.
Passage:
- 이 식당은 주말에는 사람이 많아서 기다려야 합니다.
Wrong option:
- 주말에는 식당이 쉽니다.
Why it is wrong:
- It uses 주말 and 식당, but the meaning changes. The passage says it is crowded, not closed.
Strategy 4: Spend time according to difficulty
Use a three-pass method:
- Fast pass: answer easy questions immediately.
- Check pass: return to questions with two possible answers.
- Final pass: guess only after eliminating at least one option.
Do not spend too long on one question. TOPIK I rewards stable accuracy across many short items.
⚠️ Pitfalls
- Confusing 에 and 에서: use 에 for destination/existence, 에서 for action location.
- Choosing past tense just because the sentence feels complete: always check time words.
- Ignoring negative words like 안, 못, 없어요, 아니에요.
- Choosing an option because it contains the same noun as the passage.
- Forgetting that -지만 means contrast, not cause.
- Treating 그리고 and 그래서 as interchangeable.
- Reading 너무 fast and missing numbers, dates, or prices.
- Changing speech level unnaturally in a sentence completion question.
🧭 Final Review Map
Use this map during the last study session before the exam.
Grammar
- Present: 가요, 먹어요, 공부해요
- Past: 갔어요, 먹었어요, 공부했어요
- Future/intention: 갈 거예요, 먹을 거예요
- Ability: 할 수 있어요 / 할 수 없어요
- Want: -고 싶어요
- Obligation: -아/어야 해요
- Experience: -아/어 봤어요
- Reason: -아서/어서, -기 때문에, -으니까
- Contrast: -지만
- Sequence: -고, -아서/어서
Vocabulary
Prioritize everyday high-frequency topics:
- Family, school, work
- Food, shopping, prices
- Transportation, travel, directions
- Weather, seasons, time
- Health, hobbies, plans
- Public places and notices
Reading
Ask:
- What is this text? Notice, message, advertisement, diary, invitation?
- What is the purpose?
- What changed: time, place, price, person, reason?
- Which option says the same meaning, not just the same words?

✅ Final Self-Check
Before finishing your TOPIK I Level 2 review, confirm that you can do these without long hesitation:
- Choose 에 vs 에서 correctly.
- Match tense with time words like 어제, 매일, 내일.
- Explain the difference between -지만, -아서/어서, and -고.
- Find the main idea of a short text in one reading.
- Notice negative words and exception words.
- Eliminate distractors that copy vocabulary but change the meaning.
- Keep moving when a question is hard.
If these feel stable, your final preparation should focus on timed practice and careful review of mistakes, not memorizing new material.
