In Korean contexts, people are sometimes reluctant to say they didn't understand — especially in front of others or with seniors — because it can feel like an admission of weakness. This means checking for understanding isn't just a teaching tool: it's an act of care. 이해하다 = to understand (active). 이해가 되다 = to be understood / to make sense (passive — "did it become understood?"). 이해가 되셨어요? feels gentler than 이해하셨어요? because it frames comprehension as something that happens naturally, not as a test.
