🌈 The Big Picture

중심 means “center,” so 을/를 중심으로 points to the thing your sentence is organized around. Think of it as the sun in the sentence’s little solar system. ☀️

기준 means “standard” or “criterion,” so 을/를 기준으로 points to the measuring stick. If 중심으로 asks “What is the focus?”, 기준으로 asks “What standard are we using?” 📏

This is advanced grammar because the English translations can overlap: “based on,” “around,” “with a focus on.” The Korean choice depends on whether the noun is a center/focus or a standard/criterion.

🎨 The Core “Centered Around” Family

1. 명사 + 을/를 중심으로 = centered around / focused on a noun
  • 학생을 중심으로 [hak-saeng-eul jung-sim-eu-ro] — centered around students 🧑‍🎓
  • 문화를 중심으로 [mun-hwa-reul jung-sim-eu-ro] — centered around culture 🎭
  • Use it for the organizing focus of 토론 “discussion,” 연구 “research,” 발표 “presentation,” 회의 “meeting,” 계획 “plan,” or 정책 “policy.”

2. 명사 + 을/를 기준으로 = based on / according to a standard
  • 안전을 기준으로 [an-jeon-eul gi-jun-eu-ro] — based on safety 🦺
  • 예산을 기준으로 [ye-san-eul gi-jun-eu-ro] — based on the budget 💰
  • Use it when the noun is the standard for 평가하다 “to evaluate,” 비교하다 “to compare,” 정리하다 “to organize,” or 결정하다 “to decide.”

3. Helpful companion words
  • 프로젝트 “project,” “team,” 지역 “region,” 문제 “problem,” 해결책 “solution,” 자료 “materials/data,” 사례 “case/example,” 결과 “result,” 목표 “goal,” 사용자 “user,” 고객 “customer,” 환자 “patient,” 가족 “family,” 환경 “environment,” 시장 “market,” 의견 “opinion,” 경험 “experience,” and 디자인 “design” are common nouns you’ll see with this grammar.

🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence

Focus / center
  • 우리는 학생을 중심으로 수업을 만들었어요. [u-ri-neun hak-saeng-eul jung-sim-eu-ro su-eob-eul man-deu-reo-sseo-yo]
    • We made the class centered around students. 🧑‍🎓
학생 = student, 수업 = class, 만들다 = to make.

Criterion / standard
  • 팀은 안전을 기준으로 계획을 세웠어요. [ti-meun an-jeon-eul gi-jun-eu-ro gye-hoeg-eul se-wo-sseo-yo]
    • The team made the plan based on safety. 🦺
안전 is the judging standard, not the “center” of a story.

Contrast in one breath
  • 회의는 환경을 중심으로 진행하고, 결과는 비용을 기준으로 비교해요. [hoe-ui-neun hwan-gyeong-eul jung-sim-eu-ro jin-haeng-ha-go, gyeol-gwa-neun bi-yong-eul gi-jun-eu-ro bi-gyo-hae-yo]
    • The meeting proceeds with the environment as the focus, and the results are compared based on cost. 🌿💸
진행하다 = to proceed, 비교하다 = to compare, 비용 = cost.

🧩 General Formation Rule

Use a noun, then choose the object marker by final sound:
  • Final consonant: 명사 + 을 중심으로 / 명사 + 을 기준으로
    • 학생학생을 중심으로; 안전안전을 기준으로
  • Vowel ending: 명사 + 를 중심으로 / 명사 + 를 기준으로
    • 문화문화를 중심으로; 자료자료를 기준으로

Tiny pronunciation note 🎧: 중심으로 is naturally said [jung-si-meu-ro]; the sound slides smoothly into .

📚 Cross-check note

The meanings of 중심 “center,” 기준 “standard/criterion,” and the particle choice 을/를 were cross-checked against National Institute of Korean Language resources at korean.go.kr. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

  • 을/를 중심으로 — everyday/formal; focus-centered, “with X as the center.”
  • 을/를 기준으로 — formal/analytical; standard-centered, “based on X as the criterion.”
  • 을/를 바탕으로 — “based on / on the foundation of”; useful for sources or background, but this lesson focuses on 중심으로 vs 기준으로.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 기준을 중심으로 평가해요 → ✅ 기준으로 평가해요 (A criterion is used as the standard, not usually “centered around” itself.) ⚖️
  • 학생를 중심으로 → ✅ 학생을 중심으로 (학생 ends in a consonant, so use .) 🧑‍🎓
  • 문화을 중심으로 → ✅ 문화를 중심으로 (문화 ends in a vowel, so use .) 🎭
  • ❌ Translating every 중심으로 as “based on” → ✅ Ask whether the noun is a focus or a standard first. 🧭
  • ❌ Using 기준으로 for an emotional theme → ✅ Use 중심으로 when the noun is the topic or theme. 💬

You now have the compass and the ruler: 중심으로 points to the focus 🧭, while 기준으로 points to the standard 📏. Beautifully nerdy, very useful.
