TL;DR 🦄
  • 🔍 Causality asks whether one thing actually produces another: 인과관계 = causal relationship.
  • 📈 Correlation says two things move together, but it does not prove cause: 상관관계 = correlation.
  • 🛡️ Strong analysis separates 원인 (cause), 결과 (result), 근거 (evidence), and 우연 (coincidence) before making a claim.

🌈 The Big Picture

Advanced Korean reading and writing often asks you to explain why something happened, whether two facts are merely connected, or whether a conclusion is too bold. This lesson gives you the vocabulary to talk about that logic clearly. 🧠
The key split is simple but powerful: 인과관계 means “A caused B,” while 상관관계 means “A and B are related or move together.” A graph may show 상관관계, but you need stronger 근거 to claim 인과관계. 📊
You’ll also learn warning words for bad reasoning: 착각 (mistaken assumption), 논리적 비약 (logical leap), 성급한 결론 (hasty conclusion), and 오류 (error/fallacy). These are excellent words for essays, debates, research summaries, and TOPIK-style analytical reading — but this is an Advanced Vocabulary lesson, not a TOPIK build. 🧩

🎨 The Core Causality–Correlation Family

  • 인과관계causal relationship: one event, factor, or condition produces another.
    • 원인 = cause
    • 결과 = result
    • 영향을 미치다 = to affect / have an influence on
  • 상관관계correlation: two variables are related, but causation is not proven.
    • 관련성 = relevance / relatedness
    • 연관성 = connection / association
    • 변수 = variable
  • 요인factor: something that contributes to a situation; it may be causal, but the word itself does not prove causation.
  • 근거evidence / basis: the reason or proof used to support a claim.
  • 가설hypothesis: a tentative explanation that must be tested.
  • 검증하다to verify / test: to check whether a claim, hypothesis, or relationship is supported.
  • 반례counterexample: an example that weakens or disproves a claim.
  • 우연coincidence: two things happen together without a proven causal link.

🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence

  • 두 현상 사이에 상관관계가 있어도 인과관계가 입증된 것은 아니다.
    • Even if there is a correlation between the two phenomena, that does not mean causality has been proven. 📈
Notes: 현상 = phenomenon, 사이 = between, 입증되다 = to be proven.
  • 수면 부족은 집중력 저하의 주요 원인으로 지목되었다.
    • Lack of sleep was identified as a major cause of reduced concentration. 💤
Notes: 수면 부족 = lack of sleep, 집중력 저하 = decline in concentration, 지목되다 = to be pointed out / identified.
  • 자료만으로 결론을 내리기 전에 다른 변수를 검토해야 한다.
    • Before drawing a conclusion from the data alone, other variables should be reviewed. 🧪
Notes: 자료 = data/materials, 결론을 내리다 = to draw a conclusion, 검토하다 = to review.

🧩 General Formation Rule

This lesson is vocabulary-focused, so there is no irregular conjugation pattern to memorize. Instead, learn the logic pairings:
  • 원인 + 결과 → cause + result
  • 근거 + 주장 → evidence + claim
  • 가설 + 검증 → hypothesis + verification
  • 상관관계 + 인과관계 → correlation + causality
  • 반례 + 오류 방지 → counterexample + error prevention
🧠
Usage habit: In careful writing, avoid jumping straight from 상관관계가 있다 (“there is a correlation”) to 원인이다 (“it is the cause”). Add cautious language such as “may be related,” “requires verification,” or “other variables must be considered.”

📚 Cross-check note

The vocabulary meanings and usage distinctions in this lesson were cross-checked against National Institute of Korean Language resources, including Korean dictionary entries and usage materials from korean.go.kr. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

  • 관련성 → relatedness/relevance; broad and neutral.
  • 연관성 → association/connection; often used in analysis, research, and argument.
  • 상관관계 → correlation; more statistical or analytical than the two words above.
  • 원인 → direct cause; stronger than 요인.
  • 요인 → contributing factor; useful when you do not want to overclaim.
  • 근거 → evidence/basis; supports a claim.
  • 증거 → proof/evidence; can sound more concrete or legal/scientific depending on context.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 상관관계가 있으므로 원인이다. → ✅ 상관관계가 있지만 인과관계는 검증해야 한다. (Correlation needs verification before a causal claim.)
  • 요인 = always direct cause → ✅ 요인 means “factor,” not automatically “cause.”
  • ❌ One example proves the whole claim → ✅ Check 반례 before trusting a general conclusion.
  • ❌ Data appears together, so it must be meaningful → ✅ Consider 우연 and hidden 변수.
  • ❌ A dramatic conclusion sounds smart → ✅ A careful 근거-based conclusion sounds smarter. 🧠

🎉 You now have the vocabulary to sound analytical without accidentally blaming the umbrella for the rain. ☂️ Keep causality, correlation, and evidence in separate mental drawers, and your Korean arguments will feel much sharper. 🔍

Exercise 5 — Mixed Mastery + Pitfall Patrol 🛡️

A. ❌ 상관관계가 있으니 원인이다. ✅ 상관관계가 있으니 인과관계를 ____해야 한다.
Correlation exists, so causality should be verified. 🔎
Answer
검증하다 — ❌ Correlation does not automatically prove cause. ✅ Verification is the safer next step.
B. ❌ 요인은 항상 직접 원인이다. ✅ 요인은 여러 ____ 중 하나일 수 있다.
A factor may be one among several variables. 🧪
Answer
변수 — ❌ A factor is not always a direct cause. ✅ Other variables may be involved.

Before judging the whole from one case, check whether there is a counterexample. 🧨
Answer
반례 — ❌ One case is weak. ✅ Counterexamples help prevent overgeneralization.
D. ❌ 동시에 일어났으니 의미가 있다. ✅ ____일 가능성도 고려한다.
If two things happened at the same time, also consider the possibility of coincidence. 🎲
Answer
우연 — ❌ Same timing does not prove a meaningful relationship. ✅ Coincidence is possible.
