TL;DR 🦄
  • 🧰 -(으)로써 means by means of / with / through when a noun is the tool, material, evidence, method, or time boundary.
  • ⚖️ Use 으로써 after most consonants, and 로써 after vowels or : 법으로써, 자료로써, 글로써.
  • 🪪 Don’t confuse it with -(으)로서. 로써 answers “by what means?”; 로서 answers “in what role?”

🌈 The Big Picture

-(으)로써 is a formal particle used when a noun is the means, tool, material, evidence, standard, or time boundary behind an action. Think of it as the polished “with this / by means of this” label. 🧰

It often appears in essays, reports, presentations, official explanations, policy language, academic writing, and careful arguments. In everyday speech, plain (으)로 is usually more natural, but -(으)로써 makes the “means” relationship very clear. 📝

Useful everyday-to-formal contrasts:
  • 대화로 문제를 풀어요. [dae-hwa-ro mun-je-reul pu-reo-yo] — I solve the problem through conversation. 💬
  • 대화로써 문제를 해결합니다. [dae-hwa-ro-sseo mun-je-reul hae-gyeol-ham-ni-da] — The problem is resolved by means of conversation. 💬

The tiny spelling trap is -(으)로서. One extra changes the job: 로써 = means/tool; 로서 = role/status. Tiny syllable, big grammar courtroom drama. ⚖️

🎨 The Core -(으)로써 Family

1. Tool or method: “by means of / with”

Use it when a noun is the method or tool.
  • 말로써 사람을 설득하다 [mal-lo-sseo sa-ra-meul seol-deu-ka-da] — to persuade people with words 🗣️
    • = words/speech; 사람 = person/people; 설득하다 = to persuade.
  • 대화로써 오해를 풀다 [dae-hwa-ro-sseo o-hae-reul pul-da] — to clear up a misunderstanding through conversation 💬
    • 대화 = conversation; 오해 = misunderstanding; 풀다 = to resolve/untie.
  • 노력으로써 한계를 넘다 [no-ryeo-geu-ro-sseo han-gye-reul neom-da] — to go beyond limits through effort 🧗
    • 노력 = effort; 한계 = limit; 넘다 = to cross/go beyond.

2. Basis or evidence: “using / as a basis”

Use it when a noun supports a claim, decision, result, or explanation.
  • 증거로써 사실을 입증하다 [jeung-geo-ro-sseo sa-si-reul ip-jjeung-ha-da] — to prove a fact with evidence 🔍
    • 증거 = evidence; 사실 = fact; 입증하다 = to prove.
  • 자료로써 주장을 뒷받침하다 [ja-ryo-ro-sseo ju-jang-eul dwit-bat-chi-ma-da] — to support a claim with data/materials 📊
    • 자료 = data/materials; 주장 = claim; 뒷받침하다 = to support.
  • 기준으로써 결정을 내리다 [gi-ju-neu-ro-sseo gyeol-jeong-eul nae-ri-da] — to make a decision using a standard ⚖️
    • 기준 = standard; 결정 = decision; 내리다 = to make/render.

3. Material or ingredient: “with / from”

Use it when the noun is the material used to make something.
  • 쌀로써 떡을 만들다 [ssal-lo-sseo tteo-geul man-deul-da] — to make rice cakes with rice 🍚
    • = rice; = rice cake; 만들다 = to make.
  • 나무로써 상자를 만들다 [na-mu-ro-sseo sang-ja-reul man-deul-da] — to make a box with wood 🪵
    • 나무 = wood/tree; 상자 = box.

4. Time boundary: “as of / by”

Use it when counting up to a time point.
  • 오늘로써 계약이 끝납니다. [o-neul-lo-sseo gye-ya-gi kkeut-nam-ni-da] — The contract ends as of today. 📄
    • 오늘 = today; 계약 = contract; 끝나다 = to end.
  • 올해로써 한국어를 공부한 지 3년이 됩니다. [ol-hae-ro-sseo han-gu-geo-reul gong-bu-han ji sam nyeo-ni doem-ni-da] — As of this year, it has been three years since studying Korean. 🎓
    • 올해 = this year; 한국어 = Korean language; 공부하다 = to study; 되다 = to become.

5. Contrast partner: -(으)로서

-(으)로서 marks role, status, identity, or capacity.
  • 대표로서 의견을 말하다 [dae-pyo-ro-seo ui-gyeo-neul ma-ra-da] — to speak an opinion as a representative 🪪
    • 대표 = representative; 의견 = opinion; 말하다 = to speak/say.

    • 학생 = student; 규칙 = rule; 지키다 = to follow/protect.

If the noun answers “How? With what?”, choose 로써. If it answers “As what role?”, choose 로서.

🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence

Most -(으)로써 sentences have two parts:
  1. Means / tool / evidence / time point: 명사 + (으)로써
  1. Result / action: what is proven, solved, protected, explained, made, or ended

1. Means/tool
  • 우리는 대화로써 오해를 풀 수 있습니다.
    • [u-ri-neun dae-hwa-ro-sseo o-hae-reul pul su it-seum-ni-da]
We can clear up misunderstandings through conversation. 💬
우리 = we; -는 marks the topic; 수 있습니다 = can.

2. Evidence
  • 연구자는 증거로써 사실을 입증했습니다.
    • [yeon-gu-ja-neun jeung-geo-ro-sseo sa-si-reul ip-jjeung-haet-seum-ni-da]
The researcher proved the fact with evidence. 🔍
연구자 = researcher; -를/을 marks the object.

3. Standard
  • 공정한 기준으로써 결정을 내렸습니다.
    • [gong-jeong-han gi-ju-neu-ro-sseo gyeol-jeong-eul nae-ryeot-seum-ni-da]
A decision was made using a fair standard. ⚖️
공정한 = fair; 결정 = decision.

4. Role contrast
  • 저는 대표로서 회의에 참석했습니다.
    • [jeo-neun dae-pyo-ro-seo hoe-ui-e cham-seo-kaet-seum-ni-da]
I attended the meeting as a representative. 🪪
= I; 회의 = meeting; 참석하다 = to attend. This is role/status, so use 로서, not 로써.

🧩 General Formation Rule

Attach -(으)로써 to a noun.

1. Noun ending in a vowel + 로써

  • 대화 → 대화로써 [dae-hwa-ro-sseo] — through conversation
  • 자료 → 자료로써 [ja-ryo-ro-sseo] — with data/materials
  • 증거 → 증거로써 [jeung-geo-ro-sseo] — with evidence
  • 나무 → 나무로써 [na-mu-ro-sseo] — with wood

2. Noun ending in most consonants + 으로써

  • 법 → 법으로써 [beo-beu-ro-sseo] — by means of law
  • 노력 → 노력으로써 [no-ryeo-geu-ro-sseo] — through effort
  • 기준 → 기준으로써 [gi-ju-neu-ro-sseo] — by using a standard
  • 경험 → 경험으로써 [gyeong-heo-meu-ro-sseo] — through experience

3. Noun ending in + 로써

Like many 으로/로 forms, -ending nouns take 로써, not 으로써.
  • 말 → 말로써 [mal-lo-sseo] — with words
  • 글 → 글로써 [geul-lo-sseo] — through writing
  • 기술 → 기술로써 [gi-sul-lo-sseo] — with technology/skill

4. Action as means: use -(으)ㅁ으로써

If the means is an action, Korean often turns the verb into the formal noun form -(으)ㅁ first, then adds 으로써.
  • 연습하다 → 연습함으로써 [yeon-seu-pa-meu-ro-sseo] — by practicing
  • 읽다 → 읽음으로써 [il-geu-meu-ro-sseo] — by reading
  • 알다 → 앎으로써 [al-meu-ro-sseo] — by knowing

This page focuses on noun + -(으)로써. Its action-based cousin -(으)ㅁ으로써 is already a separate grammar pattern.

📚 Cross-check note

The 로써 / 로서 contrast was checked against korean.go.kr: 로써 marks material, means, tool, or a time-counting limit, while 로서 marks status, role, identity, or capacity. Korean.go.kr also gives contrasts such as 근거로써 when a basis is used as a means, and 근거로서 when something has the status of a basis. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

These overlap in English, but their Korean “jobs” are different:
  • -(으)로써 — by means of / with / through / as of; formal and precise 🧰
  • -(으)로 — with / by / to / into; everyday, broad, and common 🚶
  • -(으)로서 — as / in the capacity of; role, identity, status, or qualification 🪪
  • 을/를 통해 — through / via; common with channels or processes 🌉
  • -(으)ㅁ으로써 — by doing; formal action-as-means ✍️

Mini contrast:
  • 대화로써 오해를 풀었습니다. [dae-hwa-ro-sseo o-hae-reul pul-eot-seum-ni-da] — I cleared up the misunderstanding through conversation. 💬
  • 대표로서 의견을 말했습니다. [dae-pyo-ro-seo ui-gyeo-neul ma-raet-seum-ni-da] — I gave an opinion as a representative. 🪪
  • 연습함으로써 실력이 늘었습니다. [yeon-seu-pa-meu-ro-sseo sil-lyeo-gi neu-reot-seum-ni-da] — Skill improved by practicing. 📈

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 대표로써 회의에 참석했습니다. → ✅ 대표로서 회의에 참석했습니다. (representative = role/status)
  • 증거로서 사실을 입증했습니다. → ✅ 증거로써 사실을 입증했습니다. (evidence = means/basis)
  • 법로써 권리를 보호합니다. → ✅ 법으로써 권리를 보호합니다. (most consonant-ending nouns take 으로써)
  • 글으로써 생각을 남겼습니다. → ✅ 글로써 생각을 남겼습니다. (-ending nouns take 로써)
  • ❌ Using -(으)로써 casually everywhere → ✅ use plain (으)로 in everyday speech unless formal emphasis is needed.

🧰 Bottom line: -(으)로써 is your formal “by what means?” marker. Keep it in the means/tool/evidence/time lane, and let -(으)로서 handle role/status. Grammar traffic safely directed. 🚦
