TL;DR β Basic Vowels
- π΅ Korean has 10 basic vowels: .
- πͺ A vowel-only syllable needs the silent placeholder, like [a] and [o].
- π Vertical vowels sit to the right of the consonant; horizontal vowels sit below it.
π§ Iru Helper Note
Open Korean Helper Widgets and type each vowel or syllable to hear it aloud. Practice tricky pairs like [eo] vs. [o], and [eu] vs. [u]. π§
π The Big Picture
Basic vowels are the first sound pieces that make Korean syllables readable. Some are vertical, some are horizontal, and four of them have y-twin versions made by adding one extra short stroke.
The silent is important from the start. A vowel sound can begin a syllable, but written Korean still needs a consonant slot, so acts like a silent chair.
