TL;DR
- ๐ค 14 basic consonants = 10 plain + 4 aspirated. Combined with your 20 vowels, you can finally read real Korean syllables.
- ๐ Four plain consonants (ใฑ ใท ใ ใ ) shift sound by position โ soft [g/d/b/j] at the start, hard [k/t/p/t] at the end.
- ๐จ Four aspirated consonants (ใ ใ ใ ใ ) are just plain cousins with a strong puff of air โ same shape, plus an extra stroke.

๐ The Big Picture
Korean has 14 basic consonants โ called ์์ (ja-eum, "child sound"). They're split into two families:
- ๐ชจ 10 Plain consonants โ soft, neutral mouth shape
- ๐จ 4 Aspirated consonants โ same shapes with one extra stroke, pronounced with a strong puff of air
Combine any consonant with a vowel and you get a syllable โ a Lego section of sound. Korean writing stacks these sections left-to-right, top-to-bottom: [Consonant + Vowel] or [Consonant + Vowel + Final Consonant]. ๐งฑ
๐ชจ The 10 Plain Consonants
- ใฑ (๊ธฐ์ญ, gi-yeok) โ [g] / [k] โ like g in "go" ๐ถ (initial), k in "tick" (final)
- ใด (๋์, ni-eun) โ [n] โ like n in "noon" ๐
- ใท (๋๊ทฟ, di-geut) โ [d] / [t] โ like d in "do" ๐ต (initial), t in "hot" (final)
- ใน (๋ฆฌ์, ri-eul) โ [r] / [l] โ a soft tongue tap, between Spanish r and English l ๐
- ใ (๋ฏธ์, mi-eum) โ [m] โ like m in "mom" ๐ฉ
- ใ (๋น์, bi-eup) โ [b] / [p] โ like b in "boy" ๐ฆ (initial), p in "stop" (final)
- ใ (์์ท, si-ot) โ [s] / [t] โ like s in "see" ๐ (initial), silent stop [t] (final)
- ใ (์ด์, i-eung) โ silent / [ng] โ silent at start ๐คซ (you already know this from vowels!), like ng in "song" at end ๐
- ใ (์ง์, ji-eut) โ [j] โ like j in "jam" ๐
- ใ (ํ์, hi-eut) โ [h] โ like h in "hello" ๐
๐จ The 4 Aspirated Consonants
Each aspirated consonant has a plain twin โ same shape, just one extra stroke. The aspirated version is pronounced with a strong puff of air (hold a tissue in front of your mouth โ it should flutter). ๐ฌ๏ธ
- ใ (์น์, chi-eut) โ [ch] โ aspirated ใ . Like ch in "cheese" ๐ง
- ใ (ํค์, ki-euk) โ [k] โ aspirated ใฑ. Like k in "kite" ๐ช
- ใ (ํฐ์, ti-eut) โ [t] โ aspirated ใท. Like t in "top" ๐ฉ
- ใ (ํผ์, pi-eup) โ [p] โ aspirated ใ . Like p in "pop" ๐
The pairs to remember: ใฑ โ ใ
, ใท โ ใ
, ใ
โ ใ
, ใ
โ ใ
. ๐ฏ
๐ The Position Rule: Initial vs Final
Four plain consonants change sound depending on where they sit in a syllable:
- ใฑ โ [g] initial, [k] final
- ใท โ [d] initial, [t] final
- ใ โ [b] initial, [p] final
- ใ โ [s] initial, [t] final (silent stop)
- ใ โ silent initial, [ng] final
Why? At the end of a syllable, Korean doesn't release consonants โ your mouth shapes the sound but doesn't push air out. That's why final ใฑ sounds like [k] (no puff) and final ใ
sounds like [p] (no puff). ๐
๐งฑ Building Real Korean Syllables
Now that you have consonants AND vowels, you can read real Korean! Here's how syllables stack:
- Consonant + Vowel (stacked horizontally or vertically depending on the vowel)
- ๊ฐ = ใฑ + ใ = [ga]
- ๊ณ = ใฑ + ใ = [go]
- Consonant + Vowel + Final Consonant (third piece at the bottom)
- ๊ฐ = ใฑ + ใ + ใ = [gang] (river) ๐
- ๋ฐฅ = ใ + ใ + ใ = [bap] (rice/meal) ๐
Words you can read right now (just sound out each section!):
- ๊ฐ๊ตฌ [ga-gu] โ furniture ๐ช
- ๋๋ฌด [na-mu] โ tree ๐ณ
- ์ฌ๊ณผ [sa-gwa] โ apple ๐
- ์ฐ์ [u-yu] โ milk ๐ฅ
- ๋ฐ๋๋ [ba-na-na] โ banana ๐
- ์ปคํผ [keo-pi] โ coffee โ
- ์นด๋ฉ๋ผ [ka-me-ra] โ camera ๐ท
- ํผ์๋ ธ [pi-a-no] โ piano ๐น
- ๋ผ๋์ค [ra-di-o] โ radio ๐ป
- ํ ๋งํ [to-ma-to] โ tomato ๐
- ๊น์น [gim-chi] โ kimchi ๐ถ๏ธ (uses final ใ !)
- ๋น๋น๋ฐฅ [bi-bim-bap] โ bibimbap ๐ฒ (uses final ใ AND final ใ !)
โ๏ธ Stroke Magic: How They're Built
Korean consonants use simple geometric strokes โ most look like the mouth shape used to make the sound (yes, really โ King Sejong was a genius) ๐.
- ใฑ ใด ใท ใน โ straight lines and right angles
- ใ ใ โ boxes
- ใ ใ โ tent/peak shapes
- ใ ใ โ circles
- ใ ใ ใ ใ โ plain cousins + one extra horizontal stroke
Each stroke goes top-to-bottom, left-to-right. โ๏ธ
๐ค Romanization Cheats
- Position-shifters: ใฑ โ g/k, ใท โ d/t, ใ โ b/p
- Stable plains: ใด โ n, ใ โ m, ใน โ r/l, ใ โ j, ใ โ h
- ใ โ s initial, t final
- ใ โ silent initial, ng final
- Aspirated (always strong): ใ โ k, ใ โ t, ใ โ p, ใ โ ch
When in doubt, romanize by sound, not by letter. ๐ฏ
๐ Cross-check note
All consonant names, romanizations, and position-rule pronunciations above were cross-checked against the National Institute of Korean Language (korean.go.kr) official Hangul orthography guide. โ
โ ๏ธ Pitfalls to Avoid
- โ Saying ใฑ as a hard "k" at the start โ โ Initial ใฑ is soft [g], like "go". Save the hard [k] for ใ . ๐ช
- โ Adding a vowel after final consonants (saying "bi-bim-bap-puh") โ โ Final consonants are unreleased โ shape the mouth, don't push air. ๐
- โ Treating ใ as a vowel โ โ ใ is a silent placeholder at syllable start, and [ng] at the end. ๐ช
- โ Pronouncing ใน as English "r" or "l" โ โ It's a soft tongue tap between the two โ closer to Spanish "r" or Japanese "ใ". ๐
- โ Skipping the puff on aspirated consonants โ โ ใ ใ ใ ใ need a strong air burst โ that's literally what distinguishes them from their plain cousins. ๐จ
- โ Mixing up plain and aspirated pairs โ โ Memorize the 4 pairs: ใฑ/ใ , ใท/ใ , ใ /ใ , ใ /ใ . ๐ฏ
๐ Congratulations โ you can officially READ KOREAN! With 20 vowels + 14 consonants, you have every basic Hangul building section. From here, every new lesson is building vocabulary, not learning the alphabet. ๐
