๐ The Big Picture
Adverbs are the seasoning of a Korean sentence โ they tell you how something happens. ๋นจ๋ฆฌ and ์ฒ์ฒํ describe speed (quickly vs. slowly), ๋งค์ฐ and ์กฐ๊ธ describe degree (very vs. a little), and ์ describes quality (well). Unlike English, Korean adverbs almost always sit right before the verb or adjective they modify โ master that word order and these five words instantly make your sentences sound natural. ๐๐ข
๐จ The Core Adverb Family
1. ๋นจ๋ฆฌ โ quickly ๐
Describes the speed of an action โ used with action verbs.
- ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ์ค์ธ์. (Come quickly.)
- ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ๋จน์ด์. (Eat quickly.)
โ Grammar note: ๋นจ๋ฆฌ is often paired with imperatives or suggestions (-์ธ์, -์) and goes directly before the verb.
2. ์ฒ์ฒํ โ slowly ๐ข
The opposite of ๋นจ๋ฆฌ โ describes a slow, careful pace.
- ์ฒ์ฒํ ๋งํด ์ฃผ์ธ์. (Please speak slowly.)
- ์ฒ์ฒํ ๋์ธ์. (Take your time eating.)
โ Grammar note: ์ฒ์ฒํ ํ์ธ์ ("take your time") is a very common polite phrase on its own.
3. ๋งค์ฐ โ very (formal) ๐ฏ
An intensifier for adjectives, common in writing and formal speech.
- ์ด ์ํ๋ ๋งค์ฐ ์ฌ๋ฏธ์์ด์. (This movie is very interesting.)
- ๋ ์จ๊ฐ ๋งค์ฐ ์ถ์์. (The weather is very cold.)
โ Grammar note: ๋งค์ฐ precedes the adjective directly. In casual speech, ์์ฃผ/๋๋ฌด/์ง์ง are more common.
4. ์กฐ๊ธ โ a little / a bit ๐ค
Modifies verbs and adjectives to soften them, or quantifies a small amount.
- ์กฐ๊ธ ๋น์ธ์. (It's a bit expensive.)
- ํ๊ตญ์ด๋ฅผ ์กฐ๊ธ ์์์. (I know a little Korean.)
โ Grammar note: the casual contraction is ์ข โ ์ข ๋์์ฃผ์ธ์ ("please help me a bit") is extremely common.
5. ์ โ well ๐
Modifies a verb to mean "well" or "skillfully."
- ํ๊ตญ์ด๋ฅผ ์ํด์. (I speak Korean well.)
- ์ ์ค์ด์? (Did you sleep well?)
โ Grammar note: ์ + ํ๋ค = ์ํ๋ค ("to be good at / do well"), a single verb in its own right.
๐ ๏ธ How They Work in a Sentence
- ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ์ค์ธ์, ํ์ง๋ง ๊ธธ์ด ๋ฏธ๋๋ฌ์ฐ๋๊น ์ฒ์ฒํ ์ด์ ํ์ธ์.
(Come quickly, but since the road is slippery, drive slowly.)
โ ๋นจ๋ฆฌ and ์ฒ์ฒํ contrast speed depending on the situation.
- ์ด ์ผ์ดํฌ๋ ๋งค์ฐ ๋ง์์ง๋ง ์กฐ๊ธ๋ง ๋จน์์ด์.
(This cake is very delicious, but I only ate a little.)
โ ๋งค์ฐ intensifies the adjective ๋ง์๋ค; ์กฐ๊ธ quantifies how much was eaten.
- ์ฒ์์๋ ์ด๋ ค์ ์ง๋ง ์ด์ ํ๊ตญ์ด๋ฅผ ์ํด์.
(At first it was hard, but now I'm good at Korean.)
โ ์ + ํ๋ค = ์ํ๋ค, "to be good at."
๐งฉ General Formation Rule
- ๋นจ๋ฆฌ/์ฒ์ฒํ โ manner adverbs describing speed; placed directly before the verb
- ๋งค์ฐ/์กฐ๊ธ โ degree adverbs; ๋งค์ฐ intensifies (formal register), ์กฐ๊ธ softens or quantifies
- ์ โ placed directly before the verb, often forming ์ํ๋ค ("to be good at")
- ์กฐ๊ธ โ ์ข in casual speech, both standalone and as a softener for requests

๐ช Synonym Alert
- ๋นจ๋ฆฌ vs ์ผ์ฐ โ ๋นจ๋ฆฌ = "quickly" (the speed of an action); ์ผ์ฐ = "early" (a point in time). ๋นจ๋ฆฌ ์์ (come quickly) vs. ์ผ์ฐ ์์ (come early).
- ๋งค์ฐ vs ๋๋ฌด vs ์์ฃผ โ ๋งค์ฐ is formal/written; ์์ฃผ is neutral and common in speech; ๋๋ฌด originally meant "excessively" but is now often used casually like "very."
- ์กฐ๊ธ vs ์ข โ ์กฐ๊ธ is the fuller, slightly more formal form; ์ข is the casual contraction, and also softens requests.
- ์ vs ์ํ๋ค โ ์ is the adverb "well"; ์ํ๋ค is the standalone verb "to do well / be skilled," built from ์ + ํ๋ค.
- ์ฒ์ฒํ vs ๋๋ฆฌ๊ฒ โ both can mean "slowly," but ์ฒ์ฒํ is about pace in everyday requests ("take it slow"), while ๋๋ฆฌ๊ฒ describes an inherently slow speed or process.
โ ๏ธ Pitfalls to Dodge
- โ Confusing ๋นจ๋ฆฌ (quickly) with ์ผ์ฐ (early) โ โ ๋นจ๋ฆฌ = speed, ์ผ์ฐ = time.
- โ Using ๋งค์ฐ in casual conversation โ โ ์์ฃผ/๋๋ฌด/์ง์ง sound more natural in speech; save ๋งค์ฐ for formal writing.
- โ Thinking ์กฐ๊ธ and ์ข are different words โ โ they're the same word โ ์ข is just the casual contraction.
- โ Treating ์ ํ๋ค as two separate ideas โ โ ์ํ๋ค is its own verb meaning "to be good at something."
- โ Placing adverbs after the verb โ โ Korean adverbs go directly before the verb or adjective they modify.
