In busy areas like 명동 or 강남, asking for directions means politely getting a stranger's attention first, then asking a clear, specific question. Start with 실례합니다 ("excuse me") — it signals you need a brief moment of someone's time, even in a crowd.

실례합니다, 길 좀 물어봐도 될까요? — "Excuse me, can I ask for directions?"

여기서 어떻게 가요? — "How do I get there from here?"

Korean directions often reference landmarks (편의점, 건물, 다리) rather than street names — so don't worry if the answer involves "저 편의점 보이세요? 그 옆으로 가세요" (do you see that convenience store? Go past it) instead of a street name.

🎭 ~어떻게 가요? vs. ~이 어디예요?: Asking How vs. Asking Where

~어떻게 가요? ("how do I get to...?") asks for a route — useful when you know the name of your destination. ~이 어디예요? ("where is...?") asks for a location — useful when you're not sure if it's even nearby, or just want to confirm it exists in the area.

(asking for route) 명동역에 어떻게 가요? — "How do I get to Myeongdong Station?"

(asking for location) 이 근처에 화장실이 어디예요? — "Where's a bathroom near here?"

If you're really lost, you can combine both: 여기가 어디예요? 그리고 명동역에 어떻게 가요? — "Where am I, and how do I get to Myeongdong Station?"

🦄 Notice how the passerby uses a landmark (편의점) instead of a street name — this is very common in Korean directions.

B. 민수: 실례합니다, 명동역에 어떻게 가요? 걸어서 갈 수 있어요?

행인: 네, 걸어서 10분쯍 걸려요. 이 길로 직진하다가 큰 사거리에서 왼쪽으로 가세요.

민수: 사거리에서 왼쪽이요. 알겠습니다, 감사합니다.

Translation:

M: "Excuse me, how do I get to Myeongdong Station? Can I walk there?"

P: "Yes, it takes about 10 minutes on foot. Go straight on this road, and at the big intersection, turn left."

M: "Left at the intersection. Got it, thank you."

🧭 Speaking Tip

When approaching someone in a crowd, a light tap on the shoulder paired with 실례합니다 is normal and expected — don't be shy. Keep your question short and specific: name your destination clearly (명동역, 경복궁, etc.) rather than describing it vaguely.

If the directions feel too complex to remember, it's totally fine to ask 지도 좀 보여 주시겠어요? so the person can point on your phone's map — this often communicates more clearly than words alone, especially across language gaps.

❌ Walking straight up to someone without 실례합니다 → ✅ Always open with 실례합니다 to signal a polite interruption
