🌈 The Big Picture

Agreeing with someone in Korean is about more than just saying "yes" — it's a way of building rapport and showing you're really listening. The most common phrase is 저도 그렇게 생각해요 [jeo-do geu-reo-ke saeng-ga-kae-yo] — "I think so too," which directly echoes back the other person's opinion. For a stronger reaction, 완전 동의해요 [wan-jeon dong-ui-hae-yo] — "I completely agree" — adds emphasis with 완전 ("completely, totally"), a word you'll hear constantly in casual speech.
  • A: 이 카페 분위기 정말 좋아요 — "This café really has a nice vibe"
  • B: 저도 그렇게 생각해요 — "I think so too"

🎭 그러게요: The Sound of "Yeah, Right?"

그러게요 [geu-reo-ge-yo] is one of the most useful reaction words in spoken Korean — it's a warm, casual way to agree that often means "Yeah, I know, right?" or "That's so true." It works best when you're agreeing with a feeling or observation, especially complaints or surprises.
  • A: 오늘 진짜 덥네요 — "It's really hot today, isn't it"
  • B: 그러게요! — "Yeah, it really is!"
Another handy phrase is 제 말이 그 말이에요 [je ma-ri geu ma-ri-e-yo] — "That's exactly what I'm saying" — used when someone says something you've been thinking all along. It shows strong, enthusiastic agreement and works great in group conversations.

🧭 Speaking Tip

Korean has a whole spectrum of agreement, from mild to enthusiastic — and choosing the right level makes you sound natural. 맞아요 is the neutral baseline ("that's right"). 저도 그렇게 생각해요 and 그러게요 add personal warmth. 완전 동의해요 and 제 말이 그 말이에요 are for moments of strong, genuine agreement — save these for when you really mean it, or they can sound exaggerated. Also note: 그러게요 works great as a stand-alone reaction, while 저도 그렇게 생각해요 needs someone to have stated an opinion first.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • ❌ Using 완전 동의해요 in very formal or business settings — it's casual; in formal contexts, 저도 그렇게 생각합니다 or 동의합니다 sounds more appropriate.
  • ❌ Saying 저도 그렇게 생각해요 when the other person stated a fact, not an opinion — for facts, 맞아요 or 그러게요 fits better.
  • ❌ Confusing 저도 (me too — about yourself) with 그러게요 (a general shared reaction) — they aren't always interchangeable.
  • ❌ Overusing 제 말이 그 말이에요 — it can sound like you're taking over the conversation if used too often.
